sir.

With reference to my Confidential Despatch of

the 4th. May, 1917, I have the honour to transmit a statement

Pagry// the

ahoving expenditure in the sum of £220,403.50, incurred by the Colony in 1917, in respect of various services connected with the war, and additional expenditure in the sum of 82,504,983.65, borne by the Colony in respect of contributione to the Imperial Government.

2. No accounts had been received up to the end of

the year in connection with the Maintenance of Prisoners of

Wer in Australia, and therefore no expenditure under this

head has been included in the £220,403,50, mentioned above. A further rise of approximately one shilling in exchange, since the date of my above quoted Despatch, should lead to a

further, and considerably larger, decrease in the estimated

silver expenditure under this head.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

A....
